Our vacation home in St. Étienne d’Orthe offers the perfect starting point for a multitude of exciting activities. Explore the vibrant Côte Basque, soak up the sun on the picturesque beaches of the Atlantic Ocean, or embark on thrilling adventures in the majestic Pyrenees mountains. 

Biarritz

Just a 40-minute drive from our vacation home, Biarritz awaits, known as the St Tropez of the Atlantic coast. Experience the allure of this vibrant town by taking a leisurely stroll along the picturesque promenade, marveling at the skill of surfers on the town beach, or meandering through charming alleys and shopping streets. Indulge your taste buds at the multitude of restaurants, bars, and cafés that dot the area. Biarritz, beloved by the French, offers a wide range of activities for all ages. As the sun sets, the town comes alive, providing an abundance of options for a memorable night out. Immerse yourself in the town's rich history and old-world charm, particularly evident in the atmospheric old fishing port.

Atlantic Coast

With its seemingly endless sandy beaches, the French Atlantic coast offers just the right thing for beach lovers. Enjoy the sun on your skin, take a refreshing dip in the sea now and then and watch the surfers riding the waves. Here are my recommendations for the perfect day by the sea:

The most beautiful beaches are about 30 minutes' drive from the house. Hossegor, Capbreton, Seignosse or Labenne are particularly recommended.

Activities with kids

The region offers a wide range of activities for both adults and children, making it an enjoyable experience for the whole family.

Aqua Park Seignosse: Located in Seignosse, the Aqua Park features exciting slides, pools of various sizes, a volleyball field, and lush lawns. It promises fun for both young and old.

Dinosaur Park: Approximately an hour away, the Dinosaur Park provides an immersive experience, particularly for younger children. With a zoo-like setup, you can encounter and learn about numerous dinosaur species.

Labenne Zoo: In addition to its beautiful beach, Labenne boasts a zoo that is perfect for a family outing. Explore spacious enclosures and even enjoy a petting zoo experience.

Petit Train d'Artouste: The Petit Train d'Artouste is a great option for a family day in the Pyrenees, offering children an exciting train ride without the need for extensive hikes.

Trampoline Park: Located in the Aretzondo shopping centre in Bayonne, the trampoline park provides a fantastic activity option, especially on rainy days, ensuring a fun-filled experience.

Base de Pop: Situated by the Guiche lake in the neighboring village of Peyrehorade, Base de Pop offers various water activities, including water slides, a water course, a diving tower, and a zip line, guaranteeing endless fun for children and adults alike.

Pyrenees

Nestled amidst the awe-inspiring landscape, the Pyrenees stand tall as majestic mountains, inviting you to embark on endless adventures. Lace up your hiking boots and conquer iconic peaks that pierce the sky, offering panoramic vistas that will leave you breathless. In the winter, hit the slopes for exhilarating skiing or explore the trails on a thrilling mountain bike ride during the warmer months. As you traverse the winding paths, you'll stumble upon charming villages tucked away in the valleys, each with its own story to tell. Immerse yourself in nature's untamed beauty, where lush meadows meet rugged cliffs and crystal-clear rivers flow through ancient forests. But the Pyrenees are not just about nature; they also represent a captivating blend of French and Spanish cultures. Indulge in regional delicacies, sip exquisite wines, and witness the unique traditions that have stood the test of time. The Pyrenees are a destination that offers much more than breathtaking landscapes; it's a place where you can truly immerse yourself in a timeless world of natural wonders and cultural treasures.

San Sebastien

San Sebastián, located in the Basque Country of Spain, is a captivating coastal city that seamlessly combines natural beauty, culinary delights, and cultural richness. With its picturesque beaches, including the renowned La Concha, San Sebastián offers a paradise for sun seekers and water enthusiasts. The city is also a gastronomic haven, boasting a plethora of Michelin-starred restaurants and traditional pintxo bars, where you can savor exquisite Basque cuisine. Strolling through the elegant streets and plazas reveals a blend of architectural styles, from Belle Époque buildings to modern designs. Art and culture thrive in San Sebastián, with world-class museums and festivals such as the International Film Festival adding vibrancy to the city's cultural scene.

Bordeaux and its wine 

If you fancy venturing a bit further afield with a 1.5-hour drive, a visit to Bordeaux is highly recommended. As the 5th largest city in France, Bordeaux is renowned for its world-class wines, cultivated in the surrounding region. Beyond the wine, this vibrant city offers a wealth of attractions you'd expect from a bustling metropolis. Immerse yourself in culture, delve into its rich history, indulge in shopping, and so much more. Exploring the city is a must, and if you're a wine enthusiast, a trip to the nearby vineyards is a definite highlight. Don't miss the famous wine destination of Saint-Émilion, where you can enjoy a glass of wine at a reasonable price or discover charming wine bars. Even venturing further to a winery outside the city is a worthwhile experience. Bordeaux and its region are a wine lover's paradise, beckoning you to sip and savor the finest flavors in a setting that exudes charm and excellence.
